Die Elefanten (Elephantidae) sind eine Familie aus der Ordnung der Rüsseltiere. Die Familie stellt die größten gegenwärtig lebenden Landtiere und schließt außerdem die einzigen heute noch lebenden Vertreter der Ordnungsgruppe ein. Es werden drei rezente Arten unterschieden: der Afrikanische Elefant, der die weitgehend offenen Landschaften Afrikas südlich der Sahara bewohnt, der ebenfalls in Afrika heimische, aber weitgehend auf tropische Regenwälder beschränkte Waldelefant und der im südlichen und südöstlichen Asien vorkommende Asiatische Elefant, der eine Vielzahl von Landschaftsräumen nutzt. Alle Elefanten sind durch ihren Rüssel, ein muskulöses Organ, das aus der Verwachsung der Nase mit der Oberlippe hervorgegangen ist, und durch ihre aus den oberen Schneidezähnen gebildeten Stoßzähne gekennzeichnet. Weitere auffällige Merkmale finden sich in dem massiven Körperbau mit säulenförmigen Beinen und der grauen, wenig behaarten Haut.
Elefanten sind soziale Tiere, die in Familiengruppen aus weiblichen Individuen und deren Nachwuchs leben. Sie durchstreifen mehr oder weniger große Aktionsräume auf der Suche nach Nahrung. Die Größe der Aktionsräume und die Ausdehnung der Wanderungsbewegungen sind abhängig von lokalen Gegebenheiten wie dem genutzten Landschaftsraum und dem daraus resultierenden Nahrungsangebot. Männliche Tiere leben dagegen entweder einzelgängerisch oder formieren sich in Junggesellengruppen. Die Kommunikation untereinander, sowohl innerhalb als auch zwischen den verschiedenen Familiengruppen, findet auf mehreren Wegen statt. Zu diesen gehören Gerüche, die über Kot, Urin und Drüsensekrete vermittelt werden, Tastkontakte unter anderem mit dem Rüssel, verschiedene Körpergesten und eine reichhaltige Lautgebung, bei der variable Grolllaute im niedrigen Frequenzbereich hervorzuheben sind.
Die Nahrung der Elefanten basiert auf Pflanzen, die mit dem Rüssel aufgenommen werden. In der Regel nutzen die Tiere sowohl harte Bestandteile wie Gräser als auch weichere wie Blätter und Zweige. Die genaue Zusammensetzung wird von der jahreszeitlichen Verfügbarkeit der einzelnen Pflanzen bestimmt. Ausgewachsene männliche Tiere kommen einmal jährlich in die Musth, eine teils mehrmonatig andauernde Phase, die durch einen massiven Hormonanstieg gekennzeichnet wird. Als Resultat daraus kommt es nicht nur zu einer beständigen Sekretausscheidung, sondern auch zu einer erhöhten Aggressivität gegenüber Geschlechtsgenossen. Die Musth ist Teil des Fortpflanzungsverhaltens. Der Sexualzyklus der weiblichen Tiere währt außerordentlich lang und ist ebenfalls durch auffällige Hormonanstiege markiert. Nach einer Tragzeit von fast zwei Jahren wird zumeist ein einziges Jungtier geboren, das in der Familiengruppe aufwächst. Junge weibliche Tiere verbleiben hier nach der Geschlechtsreife, junge männliche verlassen diese dann.
Die Stammesgeschichte der Elefanten reicht bis in das ausgehende Miozän vor rund 7 Millionen Jahren zurück. Sie begann in Afrika und ist Teil der letzten Entwicklungsphase der Rüsseltiere. Neben den heute bestehenden zwei Gattungen (Loxodonta für die afrikanischen Elefanten und Elephas für die asiatischen Vertreter) sind zusätzlich mehrere ausgestorbene Formen überliefert. Die bekanntesten gehören zu den Gattungen Mammuthus (Mammute) und Palaeoloxodon. Diese erreichten auch Gebiete, die von den heutigen Arten nicht bewohnt werden, wozu etwa das westliche und nördliche Eurasien zählt. Beide Regionen durchliefen im Verlauf des Pleistozäns mehrere Vereisungsphasen, in deren Folge verschiedene kälteangepasste Elefantenarten entstanden, darunter das bekannte Wollhaarmammut. Einige Vertreter der Mammute erreichten auch als einzige Elefanten Nordamerika und begründeten dort eine eigene Entwicklungslinie. Ein Großteil der Angehörigen dieser Gattungen starb im Übergang vom Pleistozän zum Holozän vor etwa 10.000 Jahren aus, einige wenige verzwergte Inselformen überlebten noch ein wenig länger.
In der menschlichen Gesellschaftsentwicklung und Geschichte spielten Elefanten eine bedeutende Rolle. Sie wurden anfänglich als Nahrungsressource und Rohstoffquelle gejagt beziehungsweise genutzt, fanden bereits vor mehr als 30.000 Jahren Einzug in Kunst und Kultur und erlangten in späterer Zeit mit der Sesshaftwerdung und der Entstehung verschiedener Hochkulturen ebenfalls große Bedeutung. Einzig der Asiatische Elefant trat als gezähmtes Tier dauerhaft in den Dienst des Menschen. Er fungierte dabei zunächst als Last- und Arbeitstier, später wurde er in Kriegen eingesetzt und galt als Zeichen außerordentlicher Größe und Macht.
Die wissenschaftliche Erstbeschreibung des Afrikanischen und Asiatischen Elefanten datiert in das Jahr 1758. Beide Arten wurden zunächst einer einzigen Gattung zugewiesen, erst Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts erfolgte die generische Trennung der beiden Vertreter. Der Waldelefant ist erst seit dem Beginn der 2000er Jahre als eigenständige Art anerkannt.
